Inshore Saltwater Fishing or Flounder Gigging 101
Inshore saltwater fishing is a sport very different from most other fishing. You can cast your lures and fly fish at the mouths of rivers or take your boat and sit in lagoons waiting for the large striped bass to hit your bait. You can have world class inshore saltwater fishing expeditions to the lush and beautiful Costa Rica jungles. Or you can visit the murky marshes along our east coast and gulf coast regions to flounder gig. Flounder gigging has become the most popular inshore saltwater fishing trip in America. Families charter air boats with guides to take them on evening inshore saltwater fishing expeditions specifically for flounder gigging. Flounder gigging consists basically, of a pole with a hook, and a love for the hunt for flounder on the murky sandy bottom marshes that comprise the inshore saltwater fishing adventure. No need for sunscreen or hats when fishing at night.
The airboat slowly glides over the marsh as one anticipates the capture of the large flounder or “Doormat”. Once spotted, the poles are thrown and the gigging begins. Of course it takes some practice in order to accomplish the art of gigging. Your guide will have you take some practice gigs in the weeds and then the competition will begin. This is inshore saltwater fishing at its finest. The gig is thrown, the splashing begins and your heart races at the thought of having caught a flounder. Whether it compares to the “Doormat” or is just a prize for dinner the next night, the art of flounder gigging has now become your sport. These murky, muddy marshes have become your inshore saltwater fishing haven. Fishing has a new meaning to you and flounder gigging is the core.
The Best Locations
The best locations for inshore saltwater fishing are New Jersey, North Carolina, the Gulf Coast and of course Florida. If you want paradise, the answer would be Costa Rica and Mexico, especially the Yucatan Peninsula. These Central American countries have year round inshore saltwater fishing packages for families, couples or individuals. They cater to any whim or need their guests may need and are highly recommended by fishermen who have ventured into these tropical locations. Not only do you get the total inshore saltwater fishing adventure, but the tropical rain forest canopies make the adventure an awesome experience. Lazy lagoon fishing, hammock naps and monkeys and birds of all species are a rare lifetime experience. Inshore saltwater fishing is an experience unlike any other.
