Gaming from Virtual Scotland The long winter nights in Scotland create some problems which means that we have to find ways in which to entertain ourselves. Gaming comes top of my list and the Sony Playstation 2 is my favoured machine. Maybe it does not have the best graphics etc. but it has the widest selection of games available on any other games console.
There are over 700 playstation 2 games available but the playstation 2 is capable of much more for the enthusiastic gamer. Of course it has long been known that the PS2 will play the multitude of PSOne games that are available very cheaply now (some of which are really very good, especially the cartoon style platformers). However there are also emulators available for the Playstation 2.
The Mega Drive was launched in August 1989 (Genesis in the U.S.A.) and soon became extrememly popular. Sonic the Hedgehog became a household name and remains so today. Although the Mega Drive was only 16 bit many of the games are still graphically very good and the games remain highly playable. The picture to the left shows the cover to the PS2 emulator which plays nearly all of the Sega games very well.
The Mega Drive's hotest competition came in the form of the Super Nintendo or SNES. In many ways it could be considered that the SNES was a superior machine. Certainly the star Wars games went beyond those of the Sega console. Nintendo also had it's characters such as the friendly plumber Mario. The PS2 using the SNES Emulator plays virtually all the SNES games without problems, with stereo sound and excellent graphics.
