About Dundee

Dundee is Scotland's fourth largest city and stands on the slopes of the northern bank of the estuary of the River Tay. Dundee was first settled by the Picts during the Iron Age but the city was founded in the 12th century. Dundee has several nicknames including the "City of Discovery" which is in reference to the many and historical scientific activities and the fact that the RRS Discovery was built there in 1901 (The RRS Discovery was the ship used by Robert Scott during his Antarctic exploration). You are able to view the ship at Discovery Point.

Another popular nickname for Dundee is the city of "jute, jam and journalism" which is in reference to the local industry. The city first grew rich on whaling and jute and linen manufacture but later diversified into the production of jam. marmalade and confectionery. Near to Discovery Point is the Verdant Works which is a interesting industrial museum focusing on the Dundee jute industry. Another great place is the Dundee Sweet Factory which is recommended for kids but adults are welcome ;-) At the factory the sweets are made much as they were when it was first established in 1879. Dundee also had a thriving maritime and ship building industry during the 19th century.

Today these industries have been replaced by a mixed economy but about 10-15% of the workforce are still involved in the manufacturing industry (high for the UK). Modern industries such as the biotech and software industries are growing rapidly but the retail industry has expanded dramtically. The boom in the retail industry was inevitable following much investment. Dundee has, what many consider, the third most important retail centre (after Glasgow and Edinburgh) with over a quarter of a million persons within 30 minutes drive of the centre and nearly 3 quarters of a million within an hours drive. Just over the hours drive is Glasgow and Edinburgh to further increase the numbers.

Dundee is an excellent base for a Scottish vacation. There are the many benefits of the city but nearby there is a wide and varied number of places to visit which cover all tastes. For the golfer there are the many golf courses including the famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club at St Andrew's.
