About Midlothian
Midlothian is less than ten miles from Edinburgh, Scotland's capital city. The region has much to offer visitors to the area. Famous for its panoramic landscape of its Pentland Hills, its ever popular Rosslyn Chapel at Roslin and the Scottish Mining Museum, Midlothian is a perfect base for your Scottish vacation. Other visitor attractions include Crichton Castle, the Midlothian Snowsports Centre and the nearby Edinburgh Butterfly & Insect World.
Midlothian was once called Edinburghshire due to its close proximity to the capital. It is one of the hilliest counties in Central Scotland and predominantly rural. Once a hive of activity during the heyday of mining the belt of mining communities are now tranquil and appealing destinations for the tourist. There are plenty of parks and gardens such as Gore Glen Woodland Park, the Penicuik to Dalkeith Walkway, Roslin Glen Country Park, Straiton Pond Local Nature Reserve and Vogrie Country Park.

Rosslyn Chapel, is a 15th Century chapel renowned for it's unique carvings, including the legendary Apprentice Pillar. Interest in Rosslyn Chapel greatly increased following the release of the Hollywood movie "The Da Vinci Code" in which the chapel was key to the plot. It has long been rumoured that there are secret chambres below the chapel which house ancient Knights Templar treasures. Historians and archaeologists also believe that there may be hidden floors below the chapel but they are more likely to be burial chambres. Unfortunately permission has never been granted for excavation so it all remains a mystery. Read more about Rosslyn Chapel...
