About South Ayrshire

South Ayrshire is known for its high quality visitor attractions and many leisure facilities but most famously for being Robert Burns country. South Ayrshire is another Scottish county famous for its wonderful golfing opportunities with many golf courses including the Open Championship courses of Turnberry and Royal Troon.

Ayr is the main town and administrative centre of the South Ayshire and country town and birthplace of Robert Burns. As such there are many visitor attractions associated with Scotland's national poet. Ayr is the largest town on the Firth of Clyde coast and has been an important seaport and trading centre for many centuries and, at one time, was almost as important and as large as Glasgow. During the Victorian age of scottish tourism Ayr benefitted greatly, becoming a popular destination for the middle classes. Today Ayr is a busy town with many popular landmarks and plenty to keep the tourist occupied.

Alloway was once only a small village known as the birthplace of Robert Burns. Today it is an extended village on the outskirts of Ayr and considered by many to be just suburb. The town is dominated by the historic association with Burns with the Burns National Heritage Park taking in the most important sites with Burns Cottage and Museum being the most important and most visited and the old ruins of Alloway Kirk where Robert Burns set his famous, and possibly finest, poem "Tam o' Shanter".
