In 1978 my world changed, Punk had already changed me from a life limiting shy boy to a cock sure teenager but when I first heard, and saw, the Dickies version of Paranoid I realised that life was about having fun. I had already grown tired of the angst of punk and the commercialism that followed its birth and although the Dickies were obviously commercial I didn't give a "F*&$K". I decided to write to them, I can't remember exactly what I wrote but I was 13 so I suppose it was a typical fan mail letter asking if they had a fan club. Expecting nothing back I was pleasently surprised when a reply in the form of a package arrived which included photo's and the likes - I was converted. I bought their next few singles and their first album, which was a belter. When the second album was released I bought it immediately but I was somewhat disappointed as they appeared to have lost their edge. Thankfully, at the Wickerman Festival 2009, they were as close to the original sound as was possible.
The Dickies rocked, and some. It was great to hear a few of the classics, Nights in White Satin, Give It Back and, of course, Paranoid but I could not stay for the whole set as I had to shift to catch my first 15 minutes in the press pit for the Human League. That's the trouble with the Wickerman Festival - it's too damn good, you simply want to be in about five palces at the same time - all of the time!
