Here there and everywhere around the Wickerman Festival site you will find various pieces of art. These artworks range from the entertaining Cow Folly, to the paintings around the main stage to the wonderful carvings and totem poles which are slowly growing in number each year. Sometimes the artwork depicts something related to the original Wickerman movie. The above carving is of a jester.
As you can see, from the above photograph, the Wickerman Festival site is surrounded in glorious Dumfries and Galloway countryside. The annual festival is held on farmland and as such it is extremely important that the site is entirely cleaned before it is handed back to the kind farmer. The cleanup operation is immense and relies heavily upon the enthusiastic Wicker Pickers and the good behaviour of everyone else. This year I arrived early at the site and it was wonderful to see it all sparkly clean. Unfortunately, due to car trouble, we were extremely late leaving the site and it was wonderful to see the difference between those areas cleaned and those not - the difference is astounding. If you are planning to go to the Wickerman Festival in 2010 please respect the environment - it's the only one we have!
