About Angus
Angus and Dundee has a great many award-winning visitor attractions such as Glamis Castle and the R.R.S. Discovery. There are numerous other historic sites well worth a visit while staying in Angus including many interesting graveyards such as that of Cortachy Church where you can see the gravestone of James Winter who was one of the men who took part in the "Battle of the Saughs". Scotland is a land of battle sites but many such as the Battle of the Saughs were mere skirmishes to recover stolen cattle, horses or other items of value.
Scone Palace is only half an hour away from Dundee and is the historic place where the Scottish Kings were crowned. Scone Palace is the home of the Earls of Mansfield and is open to the public between March and October. The palace is a full day out for the family with a hundred acres of garden with the unique Murray Star maze and pinetum.
Glamis Castle is famed for its fairytale turrets and secret rooms and for the fact that it was the childhood home of the Queen Mother and birthplace of the late Princess Margaret. Across Angus and Dundee you will find many castles and fortified houses such as the 18th Century House of Dun which was designed by the Scottish architect William Adam. At Broughty Castle, a 15th Century estuary fort, you will find a fascinating museum with numerous hands-on exhibits and displays. Other castles include Mains Castle, Dudhope Castle, Dunnottar Castle, Edzell Castle , Red Castle and Invermark Castle.
More modern entertainment is abundant with many attractions suitable for the whole family. At Arbroath great fun can be had by visiting the Pleasureland Indoor Fairground & Amusement Arcade which has all of the usual rides such as the dodgems and waltzer together with the latest video games. Also at Arbroath is the West Links Fun Park which has many minature theme including mini formula one cars, mini golf, crazy golf, a minature railway and much more to keep the kids entertained.
For the more tranquil family day out there are wildlife centres and gardens such as Camperdown Park which is home to the city's annual flower show and food festival. Numerous museums on various themes are spread across Angus. The Kirriemuir Aviation Museum is home to a spectacular collection of World War II RAF memorabilia. The Angus Folk Museum takes a look at traditional Scottish life with many interesting exhibits which include the 19th Century Glenisla hearse.
