Fishing in Scotland is big business. A brief look at the fishing industry shows that Scotland lands about 60% of the total fish caught in the whole of the United Kingdom, not bad for a country that has less than 9% of the total population. However it is the sport of fishing in Scotland that we will be writing about here.
The tourist industry is vital to the economy of Scotland and fishing is one of the most important elements contributing around £250 million to the economy annually. Scotland offers opportunities to enjoy fishing for wild salmon, brown trout and sea trout. Fishing for these three fish has always been popularwith sea fishing being increasingly popular with visitors. However coarse fishing is becoming common in the lowlands as new species appear or are introduced purely for sport.
Scotland is a country of true beauty but for the angler wishing to experience the sport while on a family vacation will find the real true beauty is that there is plenty for the family to enjoy while you go fishing!
While driving in Scotland it often seems that every turn you take brings forth a new loch or river, baiting a visit by you with your fishing rod and tackle. The fact is that there are actually 31,469 freshwater lochs, 6,600 river systems and well over 12,000 kilometres of sea coastline, that should be enough to keep the keenest of anglers happy for more than a few years!
There are some things that you should be aware of when fishing in Scotland. Possibly the most important is that all fishing is, technically, private. To fish in most places you must first obtain a fishing permit from the legal owner of the fishing rights. There are areas where this is free but it is always best to check with the landowner first. You may find that a simple enquiry at a local hotel is all that is required.
The king of Scottish game fish is the silver Atlantic Salmon. The record for the largest salmon caught with a rod is 64lb. While fish of this size are extremely rare it is common to land a salmon of up to 30lb. The best salmon fishing can be found on the River Tay, Perthshire and where the record fish was caught. The best time of year to fish the river is in the spring. Other famous salmon fishing beats exist along the rivers Tweed, Dee and Spey so touring fishing holidays in Scotland are a possibility, especially for fishing clubs when expenses can be shared. A permit is required to fish for atlantic salmon.
Trout fishing in Scotland is also world renowned. The native brown trout, known affectionately as "broonies" can easily be found in most still or running waters. As mentioned earlier, a permit is more often required to fish. The River Tay has a Protection Order in place and is rigorously enforced to protect the 100+ fisheries that exist along it's route. Fly fishing for trout is the most common method but the use of more modern types of tackle and trout fishing techniques is becoming widespread. The sea trout is the same fish species but in the migratory form. (it is not yet known what factors influence the fishes decision to migrate). It is important to note that the sea trout is not covered by the same fishing permit as that allowing brown trout fishing and a separate, migratory fish, permit is required. However a salmon permit may cover you.
