Fly Fishing Waders
A Look At Breathable Waders
Fly fishing waders are an essential part of your fly fishing gear. In the past having a set of good quality waders meant a set of heavy duty rubber waders that were literally very heavy. With the aide of modern technology we can now enjoy the benefits of breathable fly fishing waders.
There are a great many benefits to using the modern breathable fly fishing waders. For me the most important benefit is that I no longer need to wear my neoprene waders. Don't get me wrong here I appreciated the protection afforded but it was simply murder peeling them off after a particularly hot days fly fishing. The plain and simple fact is that, without the use of breathable waders, you are likely to end up getting very sweaty while wearing chest waders.
With breathable waders you get the full protection of a waterproof material but it can breathe. You simply don't get hot.
Fly Fishing Wader Materials
The magical ingredient to these miracles of modern sports clothing is the wonderful material GORE-TEX XCR. There is simply no better material available for use in angling apparel than this, it allows us to stay out in the river for much longer in the worst of weather and the very best of weather.
Other materials used in waders are slightly more conventional such as neoprene for the booties and velcro on the pockets.
Fly Fishing Waders The Cost
Well you would expect waders using the latest materials would be extremely expensive but, like most other fly fishing gear, there are waders for every budget. I have seen them ranging from less than $100 to the more expensive high quality waders at around $450.
My favorite waders cost me a little more than I had first planned but I have noticed that they are now available at a much cheaper price. I was tempted by the fact that they had layers, these layers allow me to stay out in the coldest of days, the handwarmer pocket comes in "handy" too.
In fact all the pockets are well placed and I am still amazed at how flexible the waders are! I am about to start my second season with my breathable fly fishing waders and, I am pleased to say, that they appear to be in excellent condition. I ensured that I looked after them, taking care that they were clean and dry before packing etc, and I am sure there are a few more season's life left in them yet.
So, overall, I may have paid a little more than it would have cost for more conventional waders but I think that my money was well spent. I no longer have to suffer the constriction of neoprene and the heat, I know I have mentioned it earlier but you will not believe what a difference wearing breathable waders make.
I much prefer using the traditional fly fishing gear and, for me, nothing will ever beat the wicker creel. When I retain fish I line the creel with freshly cut fern, which is usually found nearby, and simply place the fish upon it and keep it cool until I reach home. Give it a try one day and see if you too notice and improvement in the flavor of your catch.
Quality waders should be considered essential fly fishing equipment. Sometimes the only way you can keep your shadow from spoiling your chances is to get down deep into the water. Sometimes you may only need to be a foot or two deep but when you plan to be waist or chest deep you really need the best quality waders that you can afford. I have found that I am very able to wear my breathable waders while on the bank or chest deep in total comfort and this is priceless.
