Fly Fishing Flies

Fly Fishing Flies

Without the fly, fly fishing would not exist! Fly fishing is the method of fishing with the use of flies which are used to entice the fish to bite. The fly fishing flies are split into two categories; dry flies and wet flies. This is in reference to the style of fishing used. The basic distinction between them is that the wet fly is allowed to sink below the surface of the water whereas the dry fly rests upon it.

How do Fly Fishing Flies Work?

There is much debate about why the use of flies in fishing successfully manages to catch a fish. Many people believe that the fly was originally invented to mimic insects that were the fishes natural food such as freshwater shrimp, crawfish, aquatic larvae and pupae, worms and even such things as frogs and mice! However, when you look at many of the fly fishing flies available to the angler, many use bright colors and have no resemblance of any living creature. These flies are considered "attractors" as it is believed that the fish is either so attracted to the fly that it bites out of simple curiosity or, as most people believe, the appearance of the fly triggers a naturally aggressive reaction causing the fish to attack.

There are many factors to consider; appearance, shape, color, movement and water displacement. How the fly is tied is a matter of great experimentation and successful fly patterns soon become popular. Over time some fly patterns have become known as traditional flies with the pattern varying for the type of fish to be fished for such as trout, salmon or sea trout.

Fly Fishing Tactics

It is important to note that experimentation and experience is ultra-important. Flies were originally categorized into salmon flies, trout flies or grayling flies but many flies known as salmon flies are often successful with brown trout and sea trout and vice-versa. Therefore modern anglers tend to no longer restrict themselves in the use of specific flies for specific species.

As your experience grows, and you begin to understand the intricacies of fly fishing, you will begin to understand both the behavior of your quarry and the lay of the water. Many anglers find that a fly fishing fly may work extremely well at one location but fail miserably in another. For this reason it is always best to have a wide selection of flies available on the day. If you are fishing for brown trout start with a well known trout fly and if this fails do not panic just try another or even try a salmon fly - you may find to your surprise that the least likely fly is the best.
