About Edinburgh and Lothians
Edinburgh boasts more pubs and restaurants per head than any other palce in Scotland. It's eating places, in particular, reflect it's cosmopolitan outlook. Edinburgh is a city of contrasts with the most obvious being that between the Old Town, with it's choice of museums and historic buildings such as St Giles Cathederal, and the New Town, where the symmetrical facades and crescents of handsome town-houses are well worth the walk downhill from the centre of the city. Visit the Geaorgian House in Charlotte Square for an evocation of life in the New Town or stroll along Salisbury Crags for a spectacular view of the skyline of the Old Town.
The Lothians loop around the city of edinburgh. You can choose from stately homes and castles in the west at places like Hopetoun House and House of Binns, or take a sortie of Midlothian and discover Rosslyn Chapel or Scotland's Mining Museum. East Lothian has the salty air of the sea with miles of coastline for you to explore at the John Muir Country Park near Dunbar. At North Berwick you have the chance to see wildlife the easy way, with remote cameras, at the Seabird Centre, where fantastic views of the Bass Rock, gannets, seals and a host fo other species can be viewed.
Things to see and do around Edinburgh and the Lothians
Royal Botanic Garden. Spectacular plantings, incuding the world's largest rhododendron collectio, 'the Botanics' also have fine views southwards and beyond Edinburgh to the Pentland Hills, a reminder that the Lothians countryside is within your reach.
The Queens Gallery, Edinburgh, was opened in 2002 at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, state-of-the-art facilities enable exhibitions of the most delecate works of art to be shown from the Rouyal Collection. It is open all year.
Rosslyn Chapel, is a 15th Century chapel renowned for it's unique carvings, including the legendary Apprentice Pillar. Interest in Rosslyn Chapel greatly increased following the release of the Hollywood movie "The Da Vinci Code" in which the chapel was key to the plot. It has long been rumoured that there are secret chambres below the chapel which house ancient Knights Templar treasures. Historians and archaeologists also believe that there may be hidden floors below the chapel but they are more likely to be burial chambres.
