Things to see and do around Edinburgh
The Royal Mile links together Castle Hill (the city's oldest street), the Lawnmarket, High Street and Canongate and runs through the heart of the Old Town. Take time to discover the atmospheric "closes" or alleys running rib-llike off the backbone of the Mile. Among many historic sites, there are museums such as the Writer's Museum, the Museum of Childhood and the People's Story lower down in Canongate. There is also a wide selection of pubs, restaurants and tea-shops which make the whole area a lively and enjoyable experience.
Edinburgh Castle is not merely an icon of Scotland, it takes you to the heart of the story of the nation, symbolised by the Honours of Scotland. The Honours of Scotland are Scotland's Crown Jewels which are on display along with the famous Stone of Destiny, the ancient crowning seat of Scotland's monarchs. The castle also houses the famous 15th Century gun Mons Meg, the One o' Clock Gun and the National War Museum of Scotland. The ritual of firing the One o' Clock Gun from Edinburgh Castle has been carried out every day since 1861. The gun is not fired on Sundays or during periods of wartime. It was originally intended as a time check for sailors at Leith Docks.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse is still the official residence of today's royal family when in Scotland. The Museum of Scotland houses a fascinating presentation which portrays Scottish history from prehistoric times right up to present day Scotland.
The Real Mary Kings Close. Beneath the City Chambers lies Edinburgh's deepest secret, a warren of hidden streets where people lived, worked and died between the 17th and 19th Centuries. It is open to the public all year and it well worth the visit.
