Argyll & the Isles, Loch Lomond, Stirling and Trossachs incorporate some of the most famous and popular tourist destinations of Scotland. Historically the first tourists to Scotland were faced with little ability to travel so, effectively, areas such as Oban were not open to tourists. The readily accessible Trossachs and Loch Lomond were the first popular vacation destinations of the area. It is believed that it is in Argyll that the 'Scots' first settled from Ireland in the 6th Century. Today the area still benefits from a healthy tourism industry thanks to the initial popularity and the spectacular scenery, its many historic sites and fortified strongholds.
Oban on the coast, is the areass main tourist centre with many visitor attractions, wonderful coastal walks, peaceful forest trails and excellent cycling. Visitors to Oban should take the time to climb to the top of Pulpit Hill to gain the best views of the city, the Firth of Lorn and the mountains of Morvern and Mull. Above Oban is the famous late 19th Century folly, McCaig's Tower, built in the style of an amphitheatre.
Stirling is overlooked by one of Scotland's grandest castles which is perched upon a rocky crag and was popular with the Stuart monarchs. It is considered by many to be Scotland's heritage capital.

Loch Lomond is one of Scotland's most popular tourist destinations and is one of the most interesting points on the train journey in the West Highland Line. Loch Lomond is a freshwater loch about 27 ft (8 m) above sea level and, due to its proximity to Glasgow, offers facilities for many watersports. It was a popular destination for early tourists to Scotland and its "bonnie banks" provide an excellent site for fishing and birdwatching.

An Tairbeart Heritage Centre, Loch Fyne is a celebration of Argyll life. The centre looks at the people and the wildlife of the area with various displays and demonsztrations. There are also displays of woodland crafts and other exhibitions and traditional farm animals.

Argyll Forest Park was established in 1935 and it covers 100 sq miles of forested mountains, lush valleys and the numerous lochs (including Loch Fyne, Loch Long and those between). The park has many forest walks and cycle trails with several picnic sites. Horse riding is popular with plenty of routes so be careful where you walk!
