About the Highlands and Skye

The Highlands and Skye region covers some of the most spectacular scenery in scotland. Like other parts of Scotland the highlands have a fine selection of castles and fortified strongholds including the popular Eilean Donan Castle. Like many I find it incredibly difficult to drive past Eilean Donan without stopping, if only to take a couple of photographs, Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most photographed places in the whole of Scotland and has appeared in television and film - a truly heart moving sight. Other castles in the region include; Urquhart Castle, Cawdor Castle, Dunrobin Castle, Dunvegan Castle and more.

Inverness is set on the River Ness known as the "Capital of the Highlands" as it is the main settlement of the Highlands. Ever popular with tourists is Loch Ness with countless visitors hoping to spot the famous Nessie. Growing in popularity each year is the family friendly Tartan Heart music festival held at Belladrum and the Roch Ness music festival. Other musical events are held at Inverness and it is not too difficult to find live traditional music, if you have difficulty a visit to the local Tourist Information Centre will provide you with listings.

Fort William is famed for its close proximity to Ben Nevis, Britain's highest mountain. It is a popular destination for climbers and tourists who find it an excellent base for touring the Great Glen and the Highland's west coast. Surrounded by a multitude of historic sites Fort William has many fascinating tourist attractions which include the West Highland Museum and the popular steam trains that run to Mallaig.

Glenfinnan is a small settlement on the road from Fort William to Mallaig and highly suitable for both a day trip or a more substantial vacation. Basing yourself in Glenfinnan will enable you to tour the surrounding area which includes a number of first class tourist attractions and spectacular scenery. Read more...

Skye is now joined to the mainland by the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh but two ferry connections remain (from Mallaig and Glenelg). Possibly the most well known feature of the island is the Cuillin, a spectacular range of mountains (suitable only for experienced climbers). There is lots to do around the Skye & Lochalsh area such as; visiting the Skye Golf Course having amazing views and highly playable holes, taking a boat trip around the island to experience the wonderful wildlife and views only possible from the water and there is lots more to see and do including walking cycling, pony trekking and, of course, angling in the crystal clear waters.

Cawdor Castle is famed for its romantic fairytale medieval tower and drawbridge and is considered to be the most romantic in the Highlands. It has been the home of the Thanes of Cawdor since the 14th Century and over the generations the family has accumulated an interesting collection of Flemish tapestries, paintings, weapons, furniture, books and other items which can be viewed between May and October. Visitors are allowed access to areas such as the sitting-room, kitchens and the dungeon. The gardens include a number of planned nature trails, a mini golf course and putting green, restaurant and shop.
