Known for it's friendly inhabitants the Outer Hebrides are a popular destination for those seeking a vacation out of the ordinary. Surprisingly the islands are a popular destination for surfers, cyclists, mountaineers and other sportsmen besides the expected anglers. Though fishing is a s popular as ever the number of sporting events held in the Hebrides seems to be increasing year by year.
Culturally the hebrides Isles are the main area for natural Gaelic speakers. In recent years there has been much investment in this language once widespread across Scotland and the National Mod is the showcase of traditional Gaelic talent. Gaelic seems to be an adaptable language incorporating many modern english words and the music also seems to fuse with numerous styles and the Celtic sound is wide and varied. The Hebridean Celtic Festival, which is held in Stornoway annually, is now a premier destination for those who enjoy the celtic music scene and for those who haven't experienced a Scottish music festival the HebFest is as family friendly as all of the others and a great, fun, day out for all.
Stornoway is the main town and most popular place to stay in the Outer Hebrides. However you would be missing so much if you did not venture further. The Outer Hebrides have some of the best beaches in the world a visit to the Isle of Harris provides a number of such golden shores and the west side of Lewis has areas reminiscent of Devon and Cornwall decades ago.
Historic sites are abundant witht he famous standing stones at callanish and the Carloway Broch but dotted all across the islands are numerous important sites.
