The Chapel Royal, Stirling Castle

The above photograph shows The Chapel Royal at Stirling Castle. Built by James VI of Scotland to replace and existing chapel which had been deemed insufficiently impressive for a royal chapel and the forthcoming baptism of James VI's first son, Prince Henry (in 1594).

Excavations have exposed evidence of two earlier buildings built at a slightly different angle to the present structure. The most recent of the two was at an angle which obscured the entrance to James IV's Great Hall so it was highly likely that it had been planned to replace it but the death of James in 1513 may have caused the building work to cease.
