Alexander Nasmyth

Alexander Nasmyth- A Famous Scottish Painter -
"Father of Scottish landscape painting"

Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840). Born in Edinburgh, the son of the architect Michael Nasmyth and educated at the High School and the Trustees' Academy, he went to London as a pupil of Allan Ramsay (1713-84) during 1774-8. For a while he was apprenticed to a coach-painter and spent some time in Italy studying historical theme depiction, portraits, landscapes and architectural painting. He returned to Edinburgh to set up as a portrait painter; his most famous sitter at his studio at Wardrop's Court was Robert Burns in 1788. Slowly his total interest turned to landscape painting and he became an adviser to the gentry on landscaping their estates.
