James Hogg
James Hogg- A Famous Scottish Poet
James Hogg (1770 - 1835) was also known as the 'Ettrick Shepherd'. James Hogg was, indeed, a shepherd for much of his life, and was self-educated. His real training as a poet came from his fund of Scottish folk songs and legends, and it was largely in this tradition that he wrote. His work showed great interest in the supernatural side by side with holmely wisdom and racy language, and many of his songs are still well known. Of his narrative poems Kilmeny has lasted best. His outstanding work in prose was Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner in 1824. He contributed to numerous magazines, especially Blackwood's and from 1809-1811 edited The Spy, most of which he wrote himself.
