John Abercrombie
John Abercrombie a Famous Scottish Philosopher
John Abercrombie (1780-1844), born in Aberdeen, was a famous Scottish philosopher and physician who is recognised as the first consulting physician in Scotland. In 1803 John Abercrombie graduated as M.D. at the University of Edinburgh. He then went to London, for a short time, to study in the schools and hospitals and returned to Edinburgh. On the 12th of November, 1804 John Abercrombie was admitted a Fellow of its Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh where he chose to practise.
From 1816 he published various papers in the. Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal and in 1828 he published Pathological and Practical Researches on Diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord, and Researches on the Diseases of the Intestinal Canal, Liver and other Viscera of the Abdomen. In 1830 he published Intellectual Application of Logical Methods in Science. Other publications, on a more philosophical note were; Inquiries concerning the Intellectual Powers of Man and the Investigation of Truth (1830), and The Philosophy of the Moral Feelings (1834).
In 1821 he was elected to the Royal College of Surgeons and in 1835 he was elected Lord Rector of the Marischal college of Aberdeen.
John Abercrombie died of a ruptured coronary artery in Edinburgh on the 14th of November 1844.
