King Duncan II
King Duncan II - King of Scotland
King Duncan II (c. 1060 - 1094, king 1094) Eldest son of Malcolm III (by his first wife) and grandson of Duncan I. In 1072 William and his Norman army of horsemen fought their way to the Tay where joined by a great fleet. Faced by such a large scale invasion Malcolm III was forced to negotiate with William and they met at Abernethy. Malcolm paid homage and as hostage for his good behaviour Duncan was delivered to William the Conqueror. He was held at the Norman court until released to lead an Anglo-Norman army into Scotland on his father's death in 1093. Malcolm had pursued an unpopular policy of introducing Anglo-Norman knights into Scotland and Duncan only gained his throne after defeating his uncle, Donald Bane. His success was short-lived; he was compelled to agree to reject his Norman allies, and then, within three months of his accession, was murdered at his uncle's instigation.
