King James I, II, III, IV, V, VI The Stewart dynasty founded by Robert II. Throughout their period the Stewarts struggled with the familiar problems of late medieval government - the absence of a sense of public responsibility among the nobility, which was linked with their inveterate hostility towards any group of specialised administrators whether recruited from the clergy or elsewhere. In Scotland these difficulties were accentuated by the continuous instability of the Border and of the Highlands and Western Isles.
