Norman Douglas
Norman Douglas - A Famous Scottish Writer
Norman Douglas (1868 - 1952) was born in Scotland and educated partly in Germany, his early interests were scientific. In 1893 he entered the foreign service, but not remain in it for long. Much of his life was spent travelling. He is still well known for his travel books, which included Siren Land (1911), Old Calabria (1915), Alone (1921), and Together (1923). His novel South Wind in 1917 made him famous. He was a charming, witty, and urbane writer, both observant and shrewd, but his work lacked depth and variety. His autobiographical Looking Back in 1933 was as rewarding as anything he wrote.
