Scottish Travel By Car
Scottish Travel By Car
Scotland has, in excess of 30,000 miles of roads. Throughout the United Kingdom roads continue to improve. Scotland's road system varies in quality considerably, ranging from well maintained motorways to single track roads. Travelling around Scotland by car for the foriegn visitor can be fraught with danger. Please drive carefully and when you see something you wish to look at DO NOT slow down to look, please continue until you can find somehwere to stop and then look!
Another important consideration is how to use the passing places on single track roads. The passing places are used to allow oncoming traffic to stop. If oncoming traffic is travelling uphill please stop at the nearest passing place. Stay on your side of the road! If the passing place is on your side pull in and wait. If the passing place is on the other side pull in to your side (left) and position yourself roughly in the middle to allow the traffic to pass (if there is a large vehicle, such as a coach, wishing to pass, carefully pull into the passing place on your right as these vehicles find it difficult to wind around other vehicles). Passing Places are also used to allow traffic that has built up behind you to pass. Use the instructions above, indicating early, to allow the traffic to pass.
Understanding the Law is VERY important:
- Our motorways have a speed limit of 70 miles (more info on speed limits).
- It is now illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone when you're driving, read more...
- Many of the rules in the Highway Code are legal requirements.
- The HM Government Department of Transport is a useful resource.
Note: The information above is for your guidance only, where possible you should read more.
