J. McN. Whistler "Arrangement in Grey and Black No.1:
Portrait of the Painter's Mother" Muse d'Orsay, Paris
Whistler's portrait of his mother, Anna Matilda Whistler (1804-1881), is undoubtedly the artist's most celebrated work. Whistler began the painting while his 66-year-old mother was living with him in Chelsea. On its first exhibition it was praised for its 'powerful grasp of the Protestant character'. It is both an insightful portrait and was the first of Whistler's works to be exhibited as an arrangement of colours. This iconic image continues to provide inspiration for artists, cartoonists, satirists and filmmakers. More details at http://www.whistler2003.com
