About Glasgow Transport

For information about transport in and around Glasgow you will find the Tourist Information Centre and the travel Centre in St Enoch Square most helpful. It is highly adviseable that you obtain one of the pocket maps that show the main transport routes of Glasgow.

Glasgow Airport

It should be noted that Glasgow Airport is about seven miles (11km) west of the city of Glasgow. There is a bus route running to and from the airport to Glasgow's Buchanan Bus Station. There is a Tourist Information Centre, at Glasgow Airport, which is linked to the main office in George Square. Here you will find kind and polite staff eager to assist with travel information and accommodation.

Prestwick Airport is about twenty seven miles (43km) south-west of the city of Glasgow and is linked via a railway to and from Glasgow Central Station.

Glasgow Trains

Glasgow has two main railway stations and both are main-line termini. Glasgow Central Station and Glasgow Queen Street Station are only about ten minutes walk from each other but there is a linking bus service available. Both stations have through low-level local lines which are useful in crossing the city quickly and easily.

Glasgow's Underground system is the easiest way to travel around Glasgow. It has fifteen Underground stations around the city centre, the West End and the area just south of the river Clyde.

Glasgow Buses & Coaches

The main long distance coach terminus is at Buchanan Bus Station.

Unfortunately Glasgow's bus system is rather confusing. Numerous companies directly compete leading to a multitude of differently coloured buses. There are many bus routes around the city, it's outskirts and beyond so it is advised that you obtain the pocket transport route map, from the Tourist Information Centre and the Travel Centre, which shows details of the major bus routes and numbers.

While there you should also enquire about discount tickets available for the public transport systems. Tickets are also available here for the sight-seeing tours of Glasgow which are usually on open top buses.

Glasgow Taxis

Travelling around Glasgow is easy if you choose to travel using one of the black Hackney carriages. These taxis can be hailed from the street but this can be difficult if there is a lot of traffic. The main taxi ranks are found at the two main railway stations and Buchanan Bus Station with other taxi ranks dotted around the city.
