About Glasgow

Glasgow will delight you with culture, nightlife, entertainment and shopping choice right through the year. For long described as Britain's finest Victorian city, Glasgow's story is bound up with entrepreneurial spirit and commerce. The fortunes made by the "Tobacco Lords" in the 18th Century through transatlantic trading in turn led on to the Victorian exuberance in building style which is still the hallmark of the city centre today.;

The Lighthouse, Scotland's Centre for Architecture, Design and the City, explores this theme, with particular reference to Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the Glasgow born architect, designer and artist. The city's architecture makes a fascinating study with things to watch out for being Mackintash's "The Willow Tearoom" and maybe Dr. Who's Tardis which might take you by surprise! Remember that, while you are shopping, it is often worth taking a look up above the shop's facade as many architectural delights can be seen all over Glasgow.

Glasgow has some of the finest shopping streets anywhere in the United Kingdom and is considered by many to be second only to London. Explore covered shopping areas such as the Buchanan Galleries and the elegant and chic Princes Square, as well as extensive pedestrian friendly areas by way of Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street. Then there are the exclusive designer shops of the Merchant City nearby. The retail choice is as highly individual as the city itself.
