William Hunter

William Hunter - A Famous Scottish Anatomist

William Hunter (1718 - 1783) The elder brother of John Hunter, he was educated at Glasgow and Edinburgh universities, and trained at St George's hospital London. He became surgeon-accoucheur to Middlesex in 1748 and physician-extraordinary to Queen Charlotte in 1764. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1767, and became the first professor of anatomy at the Royal Academy in 1798. Like his brother, made a large collection of anatomical specimens, which were acquired by Glasgow university. Both collections still exist and are known as the Hunterian Collections. William Hunter's chief work was Anatomy of the Human Gravid Uterus (1774), written in Latin.
